Will medical apps be to healthcare what ATMs are to banking?

The mass adoption of smartphones among physicians has not only triggered an explosion of medical apps targeted at healthcare providers, it has also encouraged an emerging trend of health and wellness apps aimed at empowering patients. In fact, there are thought to be 40,000 medical applications available for download on tablets and smartphones, with the market still in its infancy.

Medical apps enable users to monitor health and encourage patient wellness on a moment-to-moment basis, instead of only during occasional visits to the doctor’s surgery. Some even replace devices used in hospitals and doctor’s offices, such as glucometers and high-quality microscopes used by dermatologists to examine skin irregularities.

It’s been a long time in the planning, but we have finally released a whole new group of features in the BMJ learning site.
The ratings, reviews and recommendations project has several factors.

Anyone who has ever been in a meeting discussing improving a website will have heard someone say, “can’t we make it like Amazon?”. We’ve added star ratings, which are displayed at the top on each module intro page.

Image quizzes launched in Paediatrics, Sports Medicine and Emergency Medicine

Three new image quizzes have been launched by BMJ Group, covering real-life cases in Paediatrics, Sports Medicine and Emergency Medicine. The image quizzes provide an opportunity for you to use the clinical images from the following journals to test your diagnostic skills.

New images and questions appear regularly, along with several possible answers. Before selecting an answer, you can take a closer look by using the zooming function. Once you have identified the correct answer, additional information is displayed to provide further context on the diagnosis, along with any relevant references.

‘Add to portfolio’ links rolled out across BMJ journal articles

Following the launch of BMJ Portfolio earlier in the year, ‘Add to portfolio’ links have been rolled out across all articles in our suite of specialist journals.

Located in the right-hand column of the article page, these links make it even easier to track, record, plan and report on your continuing professional development.

So, for those of you that missed the introductory blog post, what is BMJ Portfolio?

It’s a tool doctors can use for recording their own needs, activities and notes relating to keeping up to date with medicine – continual professional development, or CPD, as it’s known. Why would doctors use BMJ Portfolio rather than the back of an envelope or an Excel spreadsheet?
