Undergraduate perspective on Sports & Exercise Medicine – a BJSM blog series

Newcastle and Durham Universities, in association with the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine, are proud to host the next Undergraduate Sport and Exercise Medicine Conference. The event will take place on the 10th October 2015 at Newcastle University, and provide a fantastic opportunity to gain further insight into the world of sport and exercise medicine from the perspective of participants, patients, physiotherapists and physicians.
As rugby fever grips the host nation of the Rugby World Cup, we’ll be bringing you Matt Tinsley from Newcastle Falcons and Ian Blain from Newcastle Thunder Rugby to discuss the challenges of working in a contact sport. Keynote speaker Allyson Pollock, professor of public health research and policy at Queen Mary’s Hospital and author of “Tackling Rugby”, will share her controversial views on investing rugby in schools, and if rugby isn’t your thing, there is still plenty there for you. We will discuss running and triathlon recovery and adaptation with Dr Chris Valis, former Great North Run Director, and Dr Phil Hayes.
In the afternoon we’ve got even more choices during our workshop streams that cover a wide range of SEM topics!
- Careers – by those who’ve done it and those who are in charge of the training programmes for medical, physiotherapy and sports science students
- Shoulder and knee masterclasses with top surgeons and Team GB physiotherapist Darren Wigg
- Nutrition with Dr Killer from the English Institute of Sport
- Sports psychology with Karen Howells who’ll be looking at mental health in elite sport
- Exercise and health with Dr Vishnubula founder of CORE fitness education and match doctor for York City Football Club
Ann Gates will close the day with a final key note speech from (@ExerciseWorks!) on “Training tomorrow’s doctors in exercise medicine for tomorrow’s patients”
Also, for the first time ever, we will introduce a high school scheme for aspiring medical students – students will be able to attend the SEM lectures and also benefit from the mini lecture series aimed at helping them create successful medical school applications.
With such a huge range of choices this is the top SEM Undergraduate event to attend this year! You’ll get plenty of opportunities to network with leading sports medicine professionals, and to meet new faces and like-minded people.
