{"id":746,"date":"2013-05-28T22:46:09","date_gmt":"2013-05-28T22:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/tc\/?p=746"},"modified":"2013-05-28T22:52:43","modified_gmt":"2013-05-28T22:52:43","slug":"ireland-joins-tobacco-plain-packaging-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/tc\/2013\/05\/28\/ireland-joins-tobacco-plain-packaging-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland joins tobacco plain packaging leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neurope.eu\/article\/ireland-puts-cigarettes-under-plain-packaging\">New Europe<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is with great pleasure that I announce, ahead of World No Tobacco Day on Friday, that I have received Government approval to begin the process of introducing standardised\/plain packaging of tobacco products in Ireland. \u00a0While many arguments will be made against such an introduction, I am confident that this legislation will be justified and supported purely by the fact that it will save lives,\u201d said Ireland&#8217;s health minister,\u00a0 James Reilly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The tobacco industry will no doubt introduce the same arguments it has used in the UK, New Zealand and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tobaccocontrol.bmj.com\/content\/20\/5\/361.short\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">Australia<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong> to try and stop this essential public health measure.
