Unsurprisingly, the state-owned\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com.au\/r-china-tobacco-monopoly-pushes-back-on-smoking-curbs-2014-12\"> tobacco industry has already started to push back <\/a>against these essential reforms:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe must note that smoking has hundreds of years of history and objectively a market demand for cigarettes still exists,\u201d said Ling Chengxing, director of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration. \u201cTobacco control is long term, complex and arduous work, and one-sided, absolutist and expansionist tendencies should be carefully avoided.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>China is a signatory to the WHO FCTC and has a population of more than 300 million smokers.<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In late November 2014, China began the process of introducing laws to enforce smokefree public places and ban tobacco advertising.
