This year we will highlight perspectives<br \/>\nthat are often under-represented in graphic narratives, such as<br \/>\ndepictions of the Outsider or Other in the context of issues such as<br \/>\nbarriers to healthcare, the stigma of mental illness and disability,<br \/>\nand the silent burden of caretaking.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The conference will feature keynote presentations by comics creators<br \/>\nJoyce Brabner and Joyce Farmer. Brabner, a comics artist and social<br \/>\nactivist, collaborated with her late husband Harvey Pekar on the<br \/>\ngraphic novel Our Cancer Year (1994), which won a Harvey Award for<br \/>\nbest graphic novel. Farmer is a veteran of the underground comics<br \/>\nscene who nursed her elderly parents through dementia and decline as<br \/>\nshown in her graphic memoir Special Exits (2010), which won the<br \/>\nNational Cartoonists Society award for graphic novels.<\/p>\n<p>We invite proposals for scholarly papers (20 minutes) or panel<br \/>\ndiscussions (60 minutes) focusing on medicine and comics in any form<br \/>\n(e.g., graphic novels, comic strips, graphic pathographies, manga,<br \/>\nand\/<br \/>\nor web comics). In particular, we seek presentations on the following\u2014<br \/>\nand related\u2014topics:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Graphic pathographies of illness and disability<br \/>\n\u2022 The use of comics in medical education<br \/>\n\u2022 The use of comics in patient care<br \/>\n\u2022 Depictions of the illness experience from the perspective of loved<br \/>\nones and family caregivers<br \/>\n\u2022 The interface of graphic medicine and other visual arts in popular<br \/>\nculture<br \/>\n\u2022 Ethical implications of using comics to educate the public<br \/>\n\u2022 Ethical implications of patient representation in comics by<br \/>\nhealthcare providers<br \/>\n\u2022 Trends in international use of comics in healthcare settings<br \/>\n\u2022 The role of comics in provider\/patient communication<br \/>\n\u2022 Comics as virtual support groups for patients and caregivers<br \/>\n\u2022 The use of comics in bioethics discussions and education<\/p>\n<p>We also welcome workshops (120 minutes) by creators of comics on the<br \/>\nprocess, rationale, methods, and general theories behind the use of<br \/>\ncomics to explore medical themes. These are intended to be \u201chands-on\u201d<br \/>\ninteractive workshops for participants who wish to obtain particular<br \/>\nskills with regard to the creation or teaching about comics in the<br \/>\nmedical context.<\/p>\n<p>We envision this gathering as a collaboration among humanities<br \/>\nscholars, comics scholars, comics creators, healthcare professionals,<br \/>\nand comics enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>300-word proposals should be submitted by Friday, 28 February 2012 to<br \/>\nsubmissions@graphicmedicine.org.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals may be in Word, PDF, or RTF formats with the following<br \/>\ninformation in this order:<br \/>\n\u2022 author(s)<br \/>\n\u2022 affiliation<br \/>\n\u2022 email address<br \/>\n\u2022 title of abstract<br \/>\n\u2022 body of abstract<\/p>\n<p>Please identify your presentation preference:<br \/>\n\u2022 oral presentation<br \/>\n\u2022 panel discussion<br \/>\n\u2022 workshop<\/p>\n<p>While we cannot guarantee that presenters will receive their first<br \/>\nchoice of presentation format, we will attempt to honor people\u2019s<br \/>\npreferences, and we will acknowledge the receipt of all proposals<br \/>\nsubmitted. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed by an interdisciplinary<br \/>\nselection committee. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be<br \/>\ncompleted by 14 March 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Please note: Presenters are responsible for session expenses (e.g.<br \/>\nhandouts) and personal expenses (travel, hotel, and meeting<br \/>\nregistration fees).
