{"id":32,"date":"2008-11-03T11:57:23","date_gmt":"2008-11-03T10:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/?p=32"},"modified":"2008-11-03T11:57:23","modified_gmt":"2008-11-03T10:57:23","slug":"theres-going-to-be-some-kind-of-vote-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/2008\/11\/03\/theres-going-to-be-some-kind-of-vote-in-america\/","title":{"rendered":"There&#8217;s going to be some kind of vote in America&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may be aware that some Americans are going to be casting votes on&#8230; oh, something or other, this week.<\/p>\n<p>In Colorado, they&#8217;ll be doing the presidential shtick &#8211; but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.co.us\/LCS\/InitRefr\/0708InitRefr.nsf\/89fb842d0401c52087256cbc00650696\/16f403e0c19126f98725744b0050fd4d\/$FILE\/Amendment%2048.pdf\">they&#8217;ll also be voting on whether to accept an amendment to the State constitution<\/a> that would extend the definition of &#8220;person&#8221; to include all humans from the point of fertilisation &#8211; and, implicitly, to extend the full protection of the law to the newly-fertilised zygote.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman,Bold\">Ballot Title: <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman\">An amendment to the Colorado constitution defining the term &#8220;person&#8221;\u00a0to include any human being from the moment of fertilization as &#8220;person&#8221; is used in those provisions of the Colorado constitution relating to inalienable rights, equality of justice, and due process of law.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, the approval of the proposal would have implications for the law on terminations of pregnancy in the State &#8211; and, though I&#8217;m no world expert on the US constitution, it looks like any such amendment would put the State in a position at odds with that outlined at a Federal level by <em>Roe v Wade<\/em>.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll be interesting to see how things go.<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may be aware that some Americans are going to be casting votes on&#8230; oh, something or other, this week.
