{"id":156,"date":"2009-07-21T14:46:39","date_gmt":"2009-07-21T13:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/?p=156"},"modified":"2009-07-21T14:46:39","modified_gmt":"2009-07-21T13:46:39","slug":"whats-the-point-of-quarantine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/2009\/07\/21\/whats-the-point-of-quarantine\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s the point of quarantine?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve reached an important milestone: the first case of <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">Pig Aids<\/span> swine flu among people I know.\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite exciting.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s been told to stay in, avoiding contact with others, for five days by one person, for 10 by another.\u00a0 I&#8217;m wondering why this is.<\/p>\n<p>In the early days of the illness, there might have been a point.\u00a0 When we were dealing with a few tens of sniffly people, it might have been possible to contain the virus (assuming, of course, that we were willing also to close all ports and build a big glass dome over the UK just in case).\u00a0 For the sake of public protection, there might have been some warrant for this.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s not forget, of course, that not so long ago we were much more worried that&#8217;d it&#8217;d be a <em>really<\/em> serious illness &#8211; much more serious than it would appear to be at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>But, at this stage, I&#8217;m wondering whether quarantine is any use &#8211; or justified at all.\u00a0 Apparently, there were an estimated 50 thousand new cases in the UK last week.\u00a0 Why quarantine someone to contain a disease that&#8217;s infecting <em>fifty thousand a week<\/em>?\u00a0 That does seem a bit pointless.\u00a0 Even if the worst predictions about the disease come true &#8211; the Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales predicts up to 65 000 UK deaths, but even that&#8217;s deaths <em>associated with<\/em> , not <em>from<\/em>, H1N1 &#8211; it&#8217;s hard to see how keeping people sort-of-isolated (until they&#8217;ve run out of coffee and have to nip to the shops, at least) would make any difference at all.<\/p>\n<p>Actually &#8211; it will make a difference, come to think of it.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll cause unnecessary worry and distress.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Besides\u00a0&#8211; isn&#8217;t quarantine 40 days, by definition?<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve reached an important milestone: the first case of Pig Aids swine flu among people I know.\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite exciting.
