(Directions to Keele can be found here:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.keele-conference.com\/21\/directions )<\/p>\n<p>Public health raises issues that are familiar in political philosophy,<br \/>\nsuch as when is it permissible for the state to force people to do<br \/>\nsomething either for their or others good, how we ought to distribute<br \/>\nscarce resources, decision making in situations of fundamental<br \/>\nuncertainty and the limits of common moral concepts such as<br \/>\nresponsibilities in the face of disasters.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the symposium will be on topics in public health where<br \/>\nideas from political philosophy are relevant. We are particularly<br \/>\ninterested in the interplay between public health ethics and political<br \/>\nphilosophy, and what these two areas can learn from each other.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers include:<br \/>\nDr James Wilson, UCL<br \/>\nDr Martin O&#8217;Neill, York<br \/>\nDr Simon Clark, Nottingham<br \/>\nDr Stephen John, Cambridge<br \/>\nMr Adrian Viens, Queen Mary<\/p>\n<p>Attendance is free however places are strictly limited so please contact David Hunter at d.hunter@peak.keele.ac.uk to book a place.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a limited number of travel subsidies up to the value of<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a350 available for students who wish to attend the workshop available on a first come, first served basis please indicate if you would like to be considered for such a bursary when you book your place.<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are happy to announce a symposium on Public Health and Political Philosophy hosted by the Centre for Professional Ethics at Keele and funded by the Wellcome Trust.
