(Editor: I have always argued that these are as scientifically important as positive results, even if they are less appealing to the press.) As the paper states, \u201cHypothesis-driven research is at the heart of scientific endeavour, and it is often the positive, confirmatory data that get the most attention and guide further research.\u201d However, they assert that \u201cnegative data \u2026 are an integral part of scientific progress that deserve more attention.\u201d Apart from supporting Popper\u2019s view of science, publishing these papers would help diminish \u201cpublication bias\u201d. This was part of the rationale for the creation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnrbm.com\/\"><i>Journal of Negative Results in Biomedicine<\/i><\/a> (<i>JNRBM<\/i>) in 2002. \u00a0As well, publishing negative results would reduce \u00a0duplication of effort and, it is argued,\u00a0 would contribute to a more realistic appreciation of the \u201cmessy\u201d nature of science.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/?articles.view\/articleNo\/33968\/title\/Opinion--Publish-Negative-Results\/\">http:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/?articles.view\/articleNo\/33968\/title\/Opinion&#8211;Publish-Negative-Results\/<\/a><\/b><!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A provocative paper in The Scientist urges that more journals \u00a0publish negative results.
