The article<a href=\"http:\/\/injuryprevention.bmj.com\/articleusage?rid=12\/6\/365\"> usage statistics for this paper<\/a> (as for all the papers we publish) are available via a link in\u00a0the\u00a0right sidebar on\u00a0the\u00a0paper&#8217;s web page.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0intense\u00a0interest in this paper made it, Chapman noted, &#8220;quite easily the most opened\u00a0paper I have ever published on any subject in 35 years of public health\u00a0research<em id=\"__mceDel\"><em id=\"__mceDel\"><em id=\"__mceDel\">.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/em>Simon\u00a0is an accomplished researcher and a brilliant public health advocate, so it is saying a lot to\u00a0compare\u00a0this paper to his other body of work.<\/p>\n<p>However, the\u00a0interest\u00a0in this particular paper is not surprising given the context of\u00a0current\u00a0events and the simple, clear message of the analysis presented. Americans would do well to consider the lessons learned from Australia&#8217;s experience with gun safety legislation..\u00a0Catalyzed\u00a0by\u00a0a mass\u00a0shooting\u00a0in Port Arthur in 1996, a package of gun control policies was advanced in that country and had a demonstrable positive effect on the risk of death by firearm assault or suicide. And in teh intervening 16 years there have been no mass shooting in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>For those interested, Prof.\u00a0Chapman\u00a0and the\u00a0Sydney University Press\u00a0have made his 1998 book on the topic (&#8220;Over Our Dead Bodies:\u00a0Port Arthur and Australia\u2019s fight for gun control&#8221;) freely available <a href=\"http:\/\/ses.library.usyd.edu.au\/bitstream\/2123\/8938\/1\/Over-our-dead-bodies_Chapman.pdf\">online here as an e-book<\/a>.
