The incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the sudden death of an infant that is not predicted by medical history and remains unexplained after autopsy, has reduced since the world wide \u2018back to sleep\u2019 initiative implemented during the early 1990\u2019s.\u00a0 While it has been established that placing infants supine for sleep significantly decreases the risk of sudden infant death, theories explaining the physiological reasons the supine sleep position remain speculative.\u00a0 Sleep position does not appear to influence the risk of extreme cardiorespiratory events in vulnerable infants.<\/p>\n
