December’s top 10 most read list sees eight new entries. At number one this month is a qualitative study by Rich et al,<\/em> which investigates the work-life balance of doctors undertaking\u00a0post graduate m\"Tired<\/a>edical training in the UK. The authors conducted\u00a0semistructured focus groups and interviews with medical trainees and trainers and found\u00a0a\u00a0lack of work life balance that\u00a0negatively impacts on\u00a0learning and well-being. In particular, women with\u00a0children were the most affected.<\/p>\n

Other new entries include a cross sectional study by Steele et al<\/em>, which found\u00a0that\u00a0ultra-processed foods make up over\u00a0half of all calories consumed in the US diet, and contribute to almost\u00a090% of all added\u00a0sugar intake. This study also received a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fenton\u00a0et al<\/em>\u2019s systematic review on the associations between dietary acid, alkaline water and cancer incidence and treatment outcomes has dropped to fifth place in this month’s list. Jonas\u00a0et al<\/em> reached number six with a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the efficacy of surgery and invasive procedures for various conditions. The study\u00a0concludes that the effects of surgery and other invasive procedures are uncertain, particularly in pain-related conditions.<\/p>\n

Finally, at number 10 this month is a systematic review by Taylor et al<\/em>, which looks into\u00a0the affect\u00a0of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) on visual function\u00a0and quality of life (QoL) in patients living with the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
