It is sexually transmissible and the only preventive measures are behavioural; it is treatable but not curable. Should we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/145\/11\/797\">screen <\/a>for it, and if so, how often? No prizes for guessing that this a real question about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/145\/11\/797\">HIV <\/a>in the UK. <!--more-->The prevalence statistic is roughly similar to some parts of the USA, where this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/145\/11\/797\">modelling study<\/a> was conducted, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/145\/11\/797\">cost-benefit equation<\/a> is borderline (\u00a315-30K per QALY) however you play the assumptions. The authors plump for screening.<\/p>\n<p>I was quite looking forward to taking a close look at this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/145\/11\/807\">paper<\/a>, called \u201cThe pathogenesis of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/145\/11\/807\">venous thromboembolism<\/a>: evidence for multiple interrelated causes<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have a lethal virus carried by 0.2% of the community.
