I\u2019m not qualified even to start pondering the biosocial reasons why young boys apparently read less well than girls in British schools \u2013 but\u00a0 I was amused by the name of this initiative. It\u2019s called <a title=\"Project X\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oup.com\/uk\/catalogue\/?ci=9780198470120\" target=\"_blank\">Project X<\/a> \u2026.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;which suggests the literacy gurus don\u2019t know much about biology. As even a semi-literate geneticist might point out, whatever the handicap these boys have, it\u2019s certainly not due to X, although it might be related to having a Y chromosome.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a title=\"BBC Today programme running order\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/today\/hi\/today\/newsid_7814000\/7814946.stm\" target=\"_blank\">radio interview<\/a> about the OUP project, reading for pleasure is one of the best indicators of academic success \u2013 so I needn\u2019t feel guilty when I lose myself in a silly novel. But, incidentally, does anybody have any suggestions for the male equivalent of \u2018chick lit\u2019?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liz Wager<\/strong> is a freelance writer, trainer and publications consultant who works for a number of pharmaceutical companies, communication agencies, publishers and academic institutions.
