Thus, I have not included, for example, the 40<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> anniversary of the first test tube baby, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5341289\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Louise Brown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; nor the 40<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> anniversary of the poisoning, supposedly with ricin, of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6997719\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Georgi Markov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; nor the 60<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> anniversary of Ian Donald\u2019s description of the diagnostic use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/13550965\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ultrasound;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0nor the 70<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> anniversary of the National Health Service Acts; nor the 90th anniversary of the 1928 Amendments to the 1925 Dangerous Drugs Act, which made cannabis illegal; nor the 175<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> anniversary of the killing of the Prime Minister&#8217;s private secretary, Edward Drummond, in Whitehall by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24183314\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daniel M&#8217;Naghten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The anniversary list does include the following topics:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">chemistry (discovery of strychnine and ergotamine);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">therapeutics and toxicology (blood transfusion; the Chicago poisonings with antimony potassium tartrate, tartar emetic);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">infectious diseases (the Picardy sweat; the Spanish flu; discovery of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leptospira icteroides<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new institutions (the Royal College of Physicians; Merck &amp; Co; the City Chair of Materia Medica and Department of Materia Medica in the University of Edinburgh);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new publications (Pharmacopoeia Londinensis; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cancer Ward<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Words also have anniversaries. Listed at the end are words whose earliest recorded instances, as given in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oxford English Dictionary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OED<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), have anniversaries this year. For example, the term \u201cangina pectoris\u201d was first used by William Heberden in a lecture, \u201cSome Account of a Disorder of the Breast\u201d, given at the Royal College of Physicians on 21 July 1768 and published in the Medical Transactions of the College in 1772 (pictured below). Heberden\u2019s wording suggests that he coined the term. Earlier examples (antedatings) are highly unlikely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OED<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, thorough though it is, does not always list the very earliest uses of words, and antedatings can sometimes be discovered. For example, the earliest instance of \u201cchickenpox\u201d listed in the first (1889) and second (1989) editions of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OED<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was from editions of William Chambers\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cyclopedia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, dated 1727\u20131738. In <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/321\/7262\/682\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, searching for something else, I found a much earlier instance, in Richard Morton\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Puretologia or Exercitatio de Febribus Inflammatoriis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (1694): \u201c&#8230; quod Variolae istae (quod primo monui) erant maximae Benignae eae scil. quae vulgo dicuntur Chicken-Pox\u201d, an instance of an English word used in a Latin text. Since then, the lexicographers have unearthed an even earlier instance, now included in the online edition of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OED<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (updated December 2012), from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mercurius Politicus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (1658). Even earlier instances may be there to be discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-41029 \" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2018\/01\/aronson_2018_anniversaries.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"174\" \/>Anniversary words concerned with words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">perfluence (1568), a flow of words, logorrhoea;<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">word-mongering (1768), first recorded in a letter written by Laurence Sterne, discussing his definition of the word \u201cblockhead\u201d (pictures);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">spuria (1918), spurious works, words, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">None of any of those here, I hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b>Some medical anniversaries in
