Here are\u00a0<em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s top articles that received the most amount of media attention in 2016, illustrating some of these trends.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-38055\" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2017\/01\/doc_laptop-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"doc_laptop\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Medical error is third biggest cause of death in the US<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Medical error is the third leading cause of death in the US after heart disease and cancer, found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/353\/bmj.i2139\" target=\"_blank\">an analysis<\/a> by researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. It featured #2 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altmetric.com\/top100\/2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Altmetric Top 100<\/a> list of the most discussed academic content in 2016\u2014second to President Obama\u2019s article in <a href=\"http:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2533698\" target=\"_blank\">JAMA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-38059\" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2017\/01\/zika_mother_and_baby_brazil-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"zika_mother_and_baby_brazil\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Scans confirm brain damage in Zika babies<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Brain abnormalities in Zika babies born with microcephaly were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/353\/bmj.i1901\" target=\"_blank\">described<\/a> by a team of doctors from Brazil. The CT and MRI scans of the babies with a range of abnormalities revealed the significant impact of the infection on the development of the human brain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-38056\" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2017\/01\/depressed_girl-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"depressed_girl\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Migraines linked to heart disease risk in women<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Migraines are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke in women, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/353\/bmj.i2610\">reported a study<\/a> by Harvard researchers. A linked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/353\/bmj.i2806\" target=\"_blank\">commentary<\/a> cautioned that we don&#8217;t know enough about the underlying link to suggest possible interventions, but agrees &#8220;it&#8217;s time to add migraine to the list of early life medical conditions that are markers for later life cardiovascular risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-38057\" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2017\/01\/pokemon_go2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Gotta catch em all!
