You can have your say via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/theBMJ#poll-widget\">this link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Page from the polling company Ipsos MORI gives his thoughts on the question\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/352\/bmj.i1717\">an\u00a0article<\/a> for <em>The BMJ<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>His view is, <em>&#8220;With doctors\u2019 support so embedded, public opinion is not likely to really swing against doctors unless there are some well publicised deaths that can be easily and directly attributed to strike action, however long this dispute drags on. The current threat of escalating action risks alienating some of the public, but junior doctors\u2019 support runs deep.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>14.00 &#8211; The Department of Health has commented on junior doctors&#8217; industrial action. A spokesperson said,<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This strike is irresponsible and disproportionate, and with almost 25,000 operations cancelled so far, it is patients who are suffering. If the BMA had agreed to negotiate on Saturday pay, as they promised to do through ACAS in November, we&#8217;d have a negotiated agreement by now. We\u2019re here to support the docs at the hospital where we filmed Green Wing and to urge the government to listen to the medical profession\u2019s concerns so that this strike action, which no one wants, can end.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday 5th April<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>16.20 &#8211; As\u00a0the fourth round of industrial action so far this year approaches, the BMA have issued a statement urging the government to get back to the negotiating table.<\/p>\n<p>Johann Malawana, the chair of the BMA junior doctor committee chair, said&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We deeply regret any disruption this action will cause to patients, but it is because we believe this contract would be bad for the delivery of patient care in the long term that we are taking this action.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBy imposing a contract that junior doctors have no confidence in and refusing to re-enter talks with the BMA, the government has left us with no choice.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe want a contract that is fair for all junior doctors \u2013 not one of which the government has admitted will disadvantage women &#8211; and ensures that they feel valued and motivated so that the NHS can retain the GPs and hospital doctors of the future.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He adds,<em> \u201cBy pursuing its current course, the government risks alienating a generation of doctors. If it continues to ignore junior doctors\u2019 concerns, at a time when their morale is already at rock-bottom, doctors may vote with their feet which will clearly affect the long-term future of the NHS and the care it provides.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cResponsibility for industrial action now lies entirely with the government. They must start\u00a0listening and\u00a0resume negotiations on a properly funded junior doctor\u2019s contract to\u00a0protect\u00a0the future of\u00a0patient care and the NHS.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>14.51 &#8211;\u00a0Ahead of tomorrow&#8217;s latest round of industrial action, a group of NHS staff have launched a judicial review challenging the government\u2019s decision to impose a new contract on junior doctors in England.<\/p>\n<p>As the BMJ&#8217;s Abi Rimmer <a href=\"http:\/\/careers.bmj.com\/careers\/advice\/NHS_staff_launch_judicial_review_against_junior_contract_imposition\">reports<\/a>, the campaign group calling itself\u00a0Just Health has\u00a0served a \u201cletter of action\u201d on health secretary Jeremy Hunt that challenged his decision to impose a new contract.<\/p>\n<p>This of course follows\u00a0the BMA&#8217;s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bma.org.uk\/news-views-analysis\/news\/2016\/march\/bma-launches-legal-challenge-to-contract\">judicial review<\/a> which it has launched to challenge the legality of the contract imposition on equality grounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>13.23 &#8211; NHS England has published a <a href=\"http:\/\/in advance of industrial action on Wednesday April 6\">statement<\/a>\u00a0in advance of tomorrow&#8217;s strike\u00a0action.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation&#8217;s national incident director\u00a0Anne Rainsberry said&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019ve already seen that a 48-hour strike puts considerably more pressure on the NHS and it\u2019s deeply regrettable that 1000s of patients are still facing disruption because of this recurring action.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs always, the safety and care of patients is our number one priority and everything possible is being done to make sure patients will still be able to access urgent and emergency services.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFollowing closely on from the four day Easter break this will be a difficult period especially over the course of the second day.
