They &#8220;allow for an almost immediate analysis of &#8220;intricate and technical issues&#8221; which arise from the original paper,&#8221; he writes, adding: &#8220;It is possible to effectively &#8220;debate a point almost in real time with another individual.&#8221; His conclusion? &#8220;Rapid responses are wonderful.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here are some more &#8220;wonderful&#8221; ones posted over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow responder J\u00a0Schiefermueller\u00a0is similarly forthright about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2834\/rr\" target=\"_blank\">calls<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0scrap NHS 111, discussed at the recent BMA local medical committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2834\" target=\"_blank\">conference<\/a>: &#8220;I have yet to do an A&amp;E shift where I don&#8217;t see at least 3 patients that tell me &#8220;and then I tried to call my GP, but the surgery was\u00a0closed, so I called 111 and they told me to go to A&amp;E.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Funny that the GPs are moaning that non-clinical staff are doing their work&#8230; perhaps they should go back to providing a decent OOH service as they used to some years ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/05\/EC-patient-pay1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-34339\" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/05\/EC-patient-pay1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"EC-patient-pay\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>John Dean&#8217;s recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2299\" target=\"_blank\">call<\/a>\u00a0for an end to private practice continues to generate debate. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2299\/rr-42\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Bunn<\/a>\u00a0says in his weekend response: &#8220;I am not opposed to private practice in principal\u2014just the ersatz kind which sees the NHS consultant treating his private patients as a convenient way of earning a few bob on the side.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I confess that my personal favourite weekend post comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2821\/rr\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Tighe<\/a>,\u00a0submitted in response to the editorial I co-authored with Tony Delamothe about our website&#8217;s 20th birthday. Mary asks:\u00a0Could the NHS ever emulate <i>The BMJ<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>She adds: &#8220;The justifiably proud record of <i>The BMJ<\/i> in embracing 21st-century IT to optimise its availability to a worldwide audience, in so many aspects of medical news and research, stands in stark contrast to the woeful experience of so many NHS practitioners in their day jobs&#8230;Could David Payne and the IT whizzes at <i>The BMJ<\/i> help their colleagues at the NHS coalface?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Mary for this ringing endorsement.
