He is considered the top Medicare biller in the United States. Between 2004 and 2013 he billed Medicare for $190 million.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the UK, researchers from\u00a0the University of Birmingham have published a study in <em>BMJ Open<\/em> which looked at the debt medical students in the UK incur by the time of graduation. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2108\">The BMJ reports<\/a> that medical students have on average a debt burden between \u00a364 000 and \u00a382 000 pounds after graduation and that it would take around 30 years to repay their debt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/FC_bayern_doctor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-33960\" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2015\/04\/FC_bayern_doctor-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"FC_bayern_doctor\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>In Germany, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2127\">the medical team of the renowned football club Bayern Munich<\/a> has resigned allegedly due to damages to the trust that the club\u2019s management had in its doctors. Despite this incident, Hans-Wilhelm M\u00fcller-Wohlfahrt, who was the head of the club\u2019s medical team and is a highly respected doctor in Germany, will remain the doctor of the German national men\u2019s football team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2095\">A study published in the<em> Journal of Medical Ethics<\/em><\/a>\u00a0involved asking doctors in The Netherlands about decisions to withhold or withdraw treatments before death. The most common treatments withheld or withdrawn were artificial hydration\/nutrition and medications. Lack of chance of improvement and the futility of prolonging treatment were the most common reasons given for forgoing treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Like many other developing nations, Uganda has a substantial medical diaspora. <a href=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2015\/04\/20\/engaging-medical-diasporas-with-their-country-of-origin\/\">A recent blog<\/a> looks at how UK based Ugandan doctors are helping their native country tackle non-communicable diseases through partnerships and collaborations with UK based organisations and engagement with policy makers in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/01\/richard_lehman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30995\" src=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2014\/01\/richard_lehman.jpg\" alt=\"richard_lehman\" width=\"160\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2015\/04\/20\/richard-lehmans-journal-review-20-april-2015\/\">In his weekly round-up of leading general medical journals<\/a>, Richard Lehman proposes the name \u201cfatins\u201d for a new potential type of cholesterol lowering drug called proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) , which have shown some preliminary yet promising results in trials published recently in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tiago Villanueva<\/strong> is assistant editor, <\/em>The BMJ<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BMJ has reported a number of medical fraud cases in the US lately.
