But <a href=\"http:\/\/cdmc.georgetown.edu\/\">Sandra Calvert<\/a>, a professor of psychology and director of the\u00a0Children\u2019s Digital Media Center,\u00a0is talking about the role of characters\u2014especially online characters in interactive educational games\u2014in children&#8217;s learning.<\/p>\n<p>Elmo <a href=\"http:\/\/cdmc.georgetown.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Dodo-Article.pdf\">is better at teaching young American children math(s)<\/a> than his (almost identical, but unfamiliar) Taiwanese equivalent. Because they know and love him, presumably. This love is part of a parasocial relationship (the type we have with fictional characters\u2014you know, like celebrities. This stuff isn&#8217;t just for kids).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/learning.bmj.com\/learning\/home.html\">BMJ Learning<\/a>, our users consistently tell us that the thing they like most about the modules, and the thing they want more of, is case studies.\u00a0There are few fundamental tenets of education theory. One is that we all have different preferred modes of learning, but another is that we all like to engage with characters (cases) and stories (studies).<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/live\/events\/series\/technologies-in-education-forum\/\">this conference<\/a>, the focus is on education technologies for\u00a0school ages (K-12)\u2014so the speaker used the example of &#8220;we all remember that one teacher, right?&#8221; to give us context for our thoughts about characters. But for healthcare professionals, it is &#8220;that one patient.&#8221; There are probably hundreds of them:\u00a0those we&#8217;ve failed, those we&#8217;ve helped, those we just liked (or disliked). But they\u2019ve all taught us. And the best &#8220;official&#8221; medical teachers are those who taught us to learn from our patients.<\/p>\n<p>All of which reaffirms\u00a0my belief that patients need to be at the heart of what we do in medical education. Real or simulated, filmed, animated, or described: we need characters with stories to teach us how to help improve the lives of other characters with stories.
