At the <a href=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/07\/10\/georg-roeggla-nobel-laureates-meet-young-scientists\/\">64th Nobel laureate meeting in Lindau<\/a> two weeks ago, Elizabeth Blackburn (who won the 2009 Nobel prize in medicine) drew my attention to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediatheque.lindau-nobel.org\/abstracts\/31103\/2014-adventures-at-the-ends-of-chromosomes\/laureate-blackburn\">the role of telomeres<\/a> in the cellular aging process.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/349\/bmj.g4227\">Philip C Haycock and colleagues have reported<\/a> an inverse association between leucocyte telomere length and the risk of coronary heart disease in a systematic review and meta-analysis, which was\u00a0recently published\u00a0in <em>The BMJ<\/em>. This isn\u2019t easy to understand for all those like myself who aren\u2019t really familiar with this rather specialised topic.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Lehman at last simply explains the nature of telomeres in his <a href=\"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2014\/07\/14\/richard-lehmans-journal-review-14-july-2014\/\">latest weekly journal review blog<\/a>: &#8220;Telomeres are the things at the end of your chromosomes that show how much longer you have left to live.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Georg Roeggla<\/strong>\u00a0is an associate editor for The BMJ.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Telomeres are getting a lot of attention at the moment.
