Approvals and the evidence on which they are based are not disclosed publicly\u2014and neither are side effects or recalls, says the newspaper.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>However, it looks as though some members of the European Parliament are starting to agree.\u00a0 At a meeting on Wednesday, the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee met to discuss the recent high profile failures of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/344\/bmj.e306\">PIP breast implants<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/344\/bmj.e1410\">some hip prostheses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The handling of these sagas has led to \u201cserious negative impact on public health,\u201d the committee said.<\/p>\n<p><em>BMJ<\/em> investigations and research have highlighted the shortcomings in device regulation: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/342\/bmj.d2748\">http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/342\/bmj.d2748<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/342\/bmj.d2822\">http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/342\/bmj.d2822<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/342\/bmj.d2973\">http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/342\/bmj.d2973<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Premarket studies for any implants are not mandatory in Europe, but the committee thought that this should change. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/sides\/getDoc.do?pubRef=-%2f%2fEP%2f%2fTEXT%2bIM-PRESS%2b20120423IPR43732%2b0%2bDOC%2bXML%2bV0%2f%2fEN&amp;language=EN\">Other measures include a single European data base to bring together information about medical devices on the market<\/a>.
