It will no doubt provoke a deluge of correspondence in the <em>Rapid Responses<\/em> from those who believe that God disapproves of such practices. <!--more-->Having waded through the last deluge, I am still at a loss to understand why helping people to die with dignity at a time of their choosing is considered such an affront to religious values. This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/334\/7588\/295\">article <\/a>touches on how doctors are involved in these places, and could be here if we ever tried to become an open, thoughtful society. <\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/334\/7588\/299\">systematic review<\/a><strong> <\/strong>which tells us \u2013 in case we didn\u2019t know \u2013 that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/334\/7588\/299\">lifestyle interventions<\/a><strong> <\/strong>are at least as effective as drugs in preventing or delaying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/334\/7588\/299\">type 2 diabetes<\/a><strong> <\/strong>in people with impaired glucose tolerance. <\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Several of my favourite patients have been to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/334\/7588\/303\">prison<\/a>. Make no mistake about it, prison works. By subtle or not-so-subtle means, it breaks inmates to the point where they trust nobody, as this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/334\/7588\/303\">paper <\/a>demonstrates. Most prisoners leave prison in a state of mental anguish, but few of them would go to their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/334\/7588\/303\">general practitioner<\/a>.
