{"id":112,"date":"2007-02-12T11:57:09","date_gmt":"2007-02-12T10:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/resource.bmj.com\/bmj\/2007\/02\/12\/ann-intern-med-6-feb-2007\/"},"modified":"2007-02-12T11:57:09","modified_gmt":"2007-02-12T10:57:09","slug":"ann-intern-med-6-feb-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2007\/02\/12\/ann-intern-med-6-feb-2007\/","title":{"rendered":"Ann Intern Med  6 Feb 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I write from a part of England where an academic department managed to get funds to investigate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/146\/3\/157\">obstructive sleep apnoea<\/a><strong> <\/strong>long before it became a fashionable diagnosis, so lots of our patients have had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/146\/3\/157\">polysomnography <\/a>and enjoy the nocturnal pleasures of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/146\/3\/157\">continuous positive airway pressure<\/a>.<strong> <\/strong><!--more-->Despite an ever-growing body of evidence of benefit, this treatment is frowned upon by funding authorities whenever there is a financial crisis \u2013 i.e. always. But they can take some comfort from this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/146\/3\/157\">study<\/a>, which shows that when there is a good history, polysomnography can be dispensed with: though CPAP is still needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>167   <\/strong>Like most doctors of my acquaintance, I drink alcohol most evenings.
