{"id":108,"date":"2007-02-05T13:15:33","date_gmt":"2007-02-05T12:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/resource.bmj.com\/bmj\/2007\/02\/05\/lancet-3-feb-2007\/"},"modified":"2007-02-05T13:15:33","modified_gmt":"2007-02-05T12:15:33","slug":"lancet-3-feb-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2007\/02\/05\/lancet-3-feb-2007\/","title":{"rendered":"Lancet 3 Feb 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><\/strong>The amazing technical feat described in this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601937\/fulltext\">paper <\/a>may herald a new era of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601937\/fulltext\">prosthetic limb function with sensory feedback<\/a> \u2013 gory detail a-plenty in the illustrations, and optimistic speculation a-plenty in the accompanying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601640\/fulltext\">editorial.<\/a> <!--more-->The young lady lost her arm in a motorcycle accident. Shouldn\u2019t we ban these machines? And can we come up with better ways to stop wars? Or clear a billion land mines? Until we have sorted out these issues, I suspect the technological marvels described here will hardly keep pace with the rate at which people lose limbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Even in these days of electronic evidence-based medicine, therapeutic news seems to travel at widely differing speeds: very rapidly, it seems, in the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601949\/fulltext\">erythropoietin for chronic renal failure<\/a>, where I first learnt that too much <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601949\/fulltext\">haemoglobin (over 12) is a bad thing<\/a> from a study in the <em>NEJM <\/em>three months ago: and here it\u2019s all done and dusted in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601949\/fulltext\">meta-analysis<\/a>. In fact there were hints of this long before in the specialist literature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601962\/fulltext\">Wilson\u2019s disease<\/a>, darling of MRCP examiners, is pretty rare. We happen to have a patient with it in our practice who, conveniently, is a doctor, so he can keep a copy of this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601962\/fulltext\">seminar <\/a>and tell us what we need to know.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>A very useful run through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140673607601974\/fulltext\">sexual sequelae of general medical disorders<\/a>, a rarely broached but important topic.
