BMJ Careers launches new website

6 May, 11 | by BMJ

This week BMJ Careers relaunched its website with a fresh new look and improved navigation. The website, which currently has nearly 150,000 users a month, has had a design overhaul to make it easier for people to find medical jobs, educational courses, and careers advice.

The homepage gives users direct routes to hospital, general practice, and international jobs and events, but is less text heavy and much “cleaner” than the previous site.

As per the old site, users can search or browse for jobs directly from the homepage. Alternatively, the “Jobs” navigation button along the top of the website leads to pages dedicated specifically to hospital and GP or primary care trust jobs.

The homepage gives more prominence to news and feature articles on topics pertinent to medical careers, which are now published on a daily basis. The articles address issues relevant to doctors at all stages of their careers – from getting into foundation training to pensions – and cover all specialties within primary and secondary care.

The “Careers tips” box on the homepage highlights articles that we believe will be especially helpful for doctors looking to make the next step along their career path or refresh their careers, whereas the “Careers centre” section of the website brings together all BMJ Careers news and feature articles in one place, where users can read the most recent careers articles from the BMJ and browse articles by specialty or topic.

The homepage also has a widget that updates live with the latest discussions from doc2doc, BMJ Group’s online community for healthcare professionals around the world, which we hope will make the homepage feel more dynamic and “alive.”

A key new feature on the redesigned website is the events calendar, which lists medical courses and events in the United Kingdom by date. Users can search the calendar by keyword or date to find training and educational courses most relevant to their career path.

As well as looking up jobs and courses, users can also view profiles of the employers who advertise jobs on the site and find out more about the organisation’s vision and priorities, as well as more practical information such as the location of hospitals or practices and the contact details for the organisation’s recruitment team. To find out what staff think of the employer, users can click through to BMJ Group’s Job Score website, where doctors rate their jobs and employers.
