{"id":86,"date":"2009-02-18T04:55:36","date_gmt":"2009-02-18T03:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/?p=86"},"modified":"2009-03-14T10:46:47","modified_gmt":"2009-03-14T09:46:47","slug":"the-potentially-dysfunctional-supervisor-grad-student-relationship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2009\/02\/18\/the-potentially-dysfunctional-supervisor-grad-student-relationship\/","title":{"rendered":"The Potentially Dysfunctional Supervisor-Grad Student Relationship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A proportion of <strong>BJSM readers <\/strong>are graduate students or faculty. <strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/free\/v55\/i24\/24b01201.htm?utm_source=cr&amp;utm_medium=en\">This article<\/a><\/span><\/strong> raises the issue that the <strong><em>supervisor-graduate student relationship<\/em><\/strong> has the potential to be very one-sided. Trainees can feel that their future hinges on supervisor approval and just as not all people are psychologically intact, there are university faculty who are psychopaths. (See Robert Hare&#8217;s book &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Snakes-Suits-When-Psychopaths-Work\/dp\/0060837721\">Snakes in Suits<\/a>&#8216;.)<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for graduate students, psychopathic supervisors do not put out a shingle advertising this fact. The previous students who are aware of the problem are usually long-gone and, importantly, reluctant to mention problems as the University often sides with the faculty member.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Solutions?<\/span><\/strong> For now, it is a case of graduate students doing their homework &#8212; Caveat Emptor. Ask to meet with current and graduated students. Check the productivity and job placements of former students.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, Universities might consider addressing this issue &#8211; at the moment, most are happy to have this issue remain under the carpet; this is a great shame and may need a concerted push from advocates to change.
