{"id":807,"date":"2010-12-22T21:52:29","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T20:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/?p=807"},"modified":"2010-12-22T21:52:29","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T20:52:29","slug":"bjsm-author-grabs-australias-1-researcher-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stg-blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2010\/12\/22\/bjsm-author-grabs-australias-1-researcher-title\/","title":{"rendered":"BJSM author grabs Australia&#8217;s #1 researcher title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Physiotherapists have increasingly provided many of the major advances in sports and exercise medicine in the past 20 years and\u00a0Professor Paul Hodges has been pre-eminent among them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Now we regularly see sport and exercise medicine papers in\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/340\/bmj.c1035.abstract?ijkey=5da6798feef6e6dbcaef5694e6c31e5a28471bcf&amp;keytype2=tf_ipsecsha\" target=\"_blank\">BMJ<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736%2810%2961160-9\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\">Lancet<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.ama-assn.org\/content\/303\/22\/2265.full\" target=\"_blank\">JAMA <\/a>and even the <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/44\/12\/833.full?sid=56daf2bc-57f2-4f7d-ba22-e845dfe180c7\" target=\"_blank\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>. This reflects the wave of improved research and the significance of our field in addressing major health problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">One objective measure of this\u00a0new maturity in the field is grant success at national health research funding agencies. This too has been increasing for sport and exercise\u00a0health\u00a0researchers\u00a0and clinicians in the past decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Now\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/uqresearchers\/researcher\/hodgesp.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/news\/images\/media\/22415.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>Prof Hodges <\/a>has been hailed as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/news\/index.html?article=22415\" target=\"_blank\">Australia&#8217;s #1 researcher<\/a>. Remember that\u00a0nation produced\u00a010 <a href=\"http:\/\/studyinaustralia.gov.au\/Sia\/en\/WhyAustralia\/NobelPrizes.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel\u00a0Prize winners <\/a>including Howard Florey, MacFarlane Burnet and more recently <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/42\/2\/79.full?sid=97c193b5-5b56-4ca2-a632-847d16d81f87\">Barry Marshall and Robin Warren<\/a>. (See link for <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">classic <\/span><\/em>rejection letter for Dr Marshall!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">So\u00a0up against cancer, genomics, personalized medicine and the like, Professor Hodges, the new slim-line marathon man incarnation, had taken the ultimate prize. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Good for him but knowing the man, he will be\u00a0most pleased about his\u00a0drawing\u00a0attention to the important\u00a0work of physiotherapists and their colleagues in research around the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/42\/12.toc\" target=\"_blank\">December 2008 BJSM issue <\/a>featured Professor Hodges&#8217; work including the <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/42\/12.cover-expansion\" target=\"_blank\">cover image <\/a>and a key editorial &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/42\/12\/941.full\" target=\"_blank\">Transverus abdominis: a different view of the elephant<\/a>.\u00a0 His work has not been without its challengers (the sign of any iconoclastic research) and related articles in BJSM include a <a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/42\/11\/930.full?sid=3fc835fd-c10a-483d-b580-5ba120f6b134\" target=\"_blank\">perspective from Garry Allison<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Physiotherapists have increasingly provided many of the major advances in sports and exercise medicine in the past 20 years and\u00a0Professor Paul Hodges has been pre-eminent among them.\u00a0 Now we regularly see sport and exercise medicine papers in\u00a0the BMJ, Lancet, JAMA and even the New England Journal of Medicine.
