The news headline reads:<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeenews.com\/news703401.html\" target=\"_blank\">Brisk exercise \u2018cuts cancer death risk. \u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article refers to \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/45\/2\/125.abstract?sid=9800cc3b-dd93-4a08-9592-589dd79090b1\" target=\"_blank\">Laukkanen<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/45\/2\/125.abstract?sid=9800cc3b-dd93-4a08-9592-589dd79090b1\" target=\"_blank\">, Rauramaa, M\u00e4kikallio, Toriola, and Kurl\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> study that defines \u201cthe intensity of leisure-time physical activity required to reduce cancer mortality in a population-based sample of men from eastern Finland.\u201d\u00a0 2560 middle-aged men who completed a 12-month leisure-time physical activity questionnaire. \u201cAmong those who exercised at least 30 minutes per day, the risk of cancer death was clearly decreased according to the mean intensity categories (&lt;3, 3\u20136, &gt;6 <strong><a href=\"\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/clc.4960130809\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\">MET<\/a><\/strong>) of physical activity.\u201d [Remember one MET is energy use at rest \u2013 walking is about 1.5, running about 3].<\/p>\n<p>To summarize the key findings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Moderate intensity physical activity is more beneficial than low intensity physical activity in the prevention of premature death from (mainly lung and gastrointestinal) cancer in men<\/li>\n<li>The total amount of physical activity is more important than the type, frequency, or duration of a single session or intensity of physical activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Laukkanen et al. do mention the difficulty in isolating physical activity as an independent risk factor \u2013genetic and other lifestyle factors also influence cancer aetiology. Still, results are promising enough to suggest the benefits of 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
