After all, we get taught from day one at medical school that we need to step back and look at the patient, and if anyone&#8217;s done any telephone triage, you&#8217;re probably aware of the uncomfortable itch that says &#8220;I actually want to see this child &#8230; not hear about them &#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But is this true of science?<\/p>\n<p>Well, as a quick example, you could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationisbeautiful.net\/2010\/visualizing-bloodtests\/\">flip across <\/a>to explore what the graphic below tells you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/infobeautiful3.s3.amazonaws.com\/2010\/12\/main_wired_bloodwork.png\" width=\"390\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">And perhaps compare this to :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/infobeautiful2.s3.amazonaws.com\/wired_bloodwork_original.jpg\" width=\"390\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Now beyond this rather nice, but perhaps above what you&#8217;d expect the routine lab to produce, image is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov\/index.cfm\/search-for-guides-reviews-and-reports\/?pageaction=displayproduct&amp;productid=1497&amp;ECem=130516\">report from the AHRQ <\/a>which shows that if you offer systematic reviews with pictures then readers prefer it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Could we take this idea further, do you think, and be the world&#8217;s first paediatric journal that placed a key Figure as part of astudy abstract to really help readers into the paper?
