Dangerous dogs

Kidsafe Victoria (Australia) is supporting legislation on the registration or possible removal of dangerous dogs. A fatal dog attack on a four year old child was a reminder of  the potential dangers of dogs and young children. The law would give councils greater powers and resources to destroy unregistered dangerous dogs. Research from the Monash University Accident Research Centre shows that in Victoria on average, one child a day is taken to hospital as a result of an injury from a dog attack.

Comment: I am convinced these powers are needed. Do readers who are dog owners agree?

Sports concussions

In the US, a recurring issue in sports injuries in the last few years has been concussions. Recent research by the National Center for Injury Prevention found that 47% of high school football players suffer a concussion each season. And  the American Academy of Neurology estimates that  41% return to play  too soon.  On the other hand, it is predicted that the greater focus on concussions will result in helmets with more padding. And has been noted elsewhere, it is not just football players who are susceptible to concussions but cheerleaders as well.

Comment: Better helmets will certainly help but I believe far more will be achieved when the whole culture of these ‘games’ changes such that blows to the head are forbidden.
